Southern Philippines International Nursing Symposium at Gensan

The Inaugural Southern Philippines International Nursing Symposium with the theme “Global Interprofessional Collaboration for a Sustainable Environment” was held on September 6, 2017 at the Veranza Mall in General Santos City, Philippines.

The keynote speaker was Rose E. Constantino, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN, FACFE, is Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Department of Health and Community Systems. She teaches Forensic Nursing based on the content of a book she co-edited “Forensic Nursing: Evidence-based Principles and Practice published by F. A. Davis in 2013.  Her pro bono family law practice representing clients in court is founded on her research on the consequences of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) on the health, safety and well-being of women, men and children worldwide. Her current research is in evaluating the effectiveness of Online, Mobile, and Wearable delivery of health interventions to survivors of Intimate Partner Violence as a disruptive innovation (WATCH4HELP) in building healthy relationships and preventing relationship violence. She is the 2016-2017 recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship Award at the University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan and the ANA Jessie M Scott Award. Her 2017-2018 goal is to participate in the Balik (Return) Scientist Program at Centro Escolar University and a Co-Principal Investigator in a research in “Assessing the HEARTS of the Elderly in the Philippines”.

 Dr. Constantino delved on the role of leaders and leadership on the promotion of interprofessional collaboration.


Invited guests to the event were Dennis Amando the Director-at-Large for Mindanao of the Philippine Nursing Research Society and the Director for Education of the Beta Nu Delta Nursing Society, 

Elmer Organia the Dean of Nursing of Notre Dame of Tacurong College, he is also the Philippine Nurses Association President of Sultan Kudarat and the Chairman for Student Development of the Association of Deans Philippine Colleges of Nursing, Art Domingo who is a faculty member of the UP Manila, School of Health Sciences, in Koronadal City, Grace Joy Nietes she runs the General Santos Doctors’ Medical School Foundation, Inc. since 2005 as Academic Head, she is also the Chapter President of the Association of Deans of Colleges of Nursing since 2015 up to the present. The panelists shared their insights on how interprofessional collaboration promotes a sustainable environment based on their field of interest. A very interactive Open Forum followed with several audience members asking the panelists regarding their presentation.


It was attended by staff from General Santos Medical Center, Local government units, Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital, members of the Association of Deans Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN) and Philippine Nurses’ Association – Socksargen.


Philippine Nurses’ Association, Philippine Nursing Research Society, Beta Nu Delta Nursing Society and Global Pinoy Nursing collaborated to make the event possible.
