BND Supports World Tobacco Day 2012

Today, the 31st of May, we join the World Health Organization in celebrating the World No Tobacco Day whose theme. "Tobacco Industry Interference" This is to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce consumption. Let us remember that tobacco use is the second cause of death globally (after hypertension) and is currently responsible for killing one in 10 adults worldwide. In 1987, the World Health Assembly created World No Tobacco Day to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and its lethal effects. This event provides an opportunity to highlight specific tobacco control messages and to promote adherence to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Tobacco use is the number one preventable epidemic that the health community faces. Prof. Jerome Babate, the Society's president called for "vigilance against the increasingly aggressive attacks by the industry which undermine policies that protect people from the harms of tobacco."
