International Nurses Day (IND), observed on 12th of May every year, is celebrated on also the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is remembered as ‘The lady with the lamp’ for her undying commitment to the cause of healthcare.
However, in General Santos City, we celebrated the Florence Nightingale International Nurses Day on May 16th. No less than, the Philippine Nurses Association General Santos City chapter spearheaded this event.

As healthcare demands are witnessing an upward trend, the theme for IND 2009 seeks to develop the role of nurses worldwide in “Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Care Innovations”, whilealso addressing the challenges to meet this objective.
The keynote speaker for this event was Ms. Rita Tamse, RN, MN of the Philippine General Hospital.
Concurrent speakers included Prof. Jobert Porras, RN, MAN (for the professional session) and Ms. Yolly Ellen Gamutan, RN (for the student session).
As this is the day when the world applauds the nursing fraternity for their 24x7 service to promote health, we also took the opportunity of recognizing a few professional nurses.
A Silver Nightingale Award was given to Ms. Nenita Alemania, RN, a nurse supervisor of the General Santos City Hospital. Nenita is practicing nursing for the last 25 years already.
While the academic excellence awardees (who recently obtained their Master's degrees) went to Maela Babate, Juna Bolleser, Jose Vicente Faderon, Marilou Villegas and Esther Boholst.
Beta Nu Delta Nursing Society through the DDB Nursing Leadership Program provided gift certificates.
